CWU Retired Associate Membership

30 April 2008

A motion was passed at Annual Conference 2007 to create a new class of CWU membership.

Motion 61 - Bristol & Dist

Conference agrees that in order to accommodate ex-members of the CWU (or those Unions that merged to form the CWU) who are currently restricted from becoming a Class C member, a special branch membership known as branch associate membership shall be introduced. The cost of this membership will be decided by CWUHQ in conjunction with input from the Retired Members Advisory Committee. This will be paid by direct debit and allow associate members to attend all Class C meetings with full voting rights. Due to the current national restrictions these members will not be able to stand for sectional officer positions or receive the national death grant benefits. The NEC is instructed accordingly.

In line with the terms of the motion, the Retired Member's Advisory Committee (RMAC) debated the contents at its last committee. It was agreed by the RMAC that the subscription rate for the associate retired members should be set lower that the current retired member rate due to the fact that they would not be entitled to receive the CWU national death grant. It does however give an associate member the same rights and services as a current full retired member currently attracts in terms of the free will writing service, general access to the legal services department. It also gives the opportunity to the financial services benefits we currently offer via an independent financial advisor.

The rate for the Associate retired Member would then be:

  • Weekly: 69p or 79p (Inc Political Levy)
  • Monthly: £3.00 or £3.40 (Inc Political Levy)

The last NEC endorsed the RMAC's view and agreed that the implementation date will be the 1st May 2008.
