Equal OpportunitiesInternational Day Against Homophobia19 February 2008
The concept of International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) is clearly relevant as there is still so much discrimination going on. There are acts of a homophobic nature taking place every day, in the workplace or in society in general, every hour 24 hours a day 7 days a week, 365 days a week. This year IDAHO is taking place on 17 May 2008. The world is still coming to terms with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender rights and not every country, culture and community is so embracing of the diverse society that we are part of. Whilst the rights of gay people are constantly being reviewed in a positive light it was only in 1990, that the World Health Organisation removed Homosexuality from their list of mental disorders. There are still 77 countries where being gay is a crime and many religious movements perpetuate the negative connotations demonstrating the harsh world that many gay people have to suffer while trying to lead a 'normal' life. In some countries people dare not show their face, as the likely consequence will be a severe beating or even worse. The recent CWU Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equality Conference passed a motion highlighting the importance of raising awareness on IDAHO. More information
