Equal OpportunitiesInternational Women’s Day: ‘Million Women Rise’ March
4 January 2008 Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. While there are many large-scale initiatives, many diverse local activities connect women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatrical performances, fashion parades and more. ‘Million Women Rise’ MarchThe CWU are pleased to advise that the Million Women Rise Coalition have planned a huge march for International Women’s Day, on 8 March 2008. The organisers are urging as many women in the UK to take part in this march which effectively calls for an end to violence against women. Ultimately organisers are hopeful that over one million women will attend on the day. The CWU is pleased to be the first Union nationally to declare its support for what will be a historic event. The aim of the march is to draw attention to this devastating issue which affects women throughout the world. Trade Unions have and continue to play a vital role in tackling this issue. The march will be a women only event (and children under 16) men are encouraged to support the march by getting involved with the white ribbon campaign and wearing a white ribbon on the day as a sign of solidarity. The march will start at noon in Hyde Park, North Carriage Way and will finish in Trafalgar Square. Please contact the branch office or our Women's Representative for more information about the CWU's involvement in the march. |
