Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender History Month

Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender History Month

22 January 2008

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender men and women have been significant contributors to society for hundreds of years and the LGBT History Month is an opportunity to recognise these contributions.

The likes of Bayard Rustin, the gay black civil rights activist who was born in 1912, or Mark Rees the inspirational Trans character who changed the course of legal protection for members of the Trans community or Mary Ann Talbot, a lesbian who disguised her gender to work as a sailor. These are all interesting characters whose contributions are valued during LGBT History Month.

The CWU’s National Equality Officer underpinned the importance of LGBT history month by adding:

"We are keen to grow the general theme of LGBT history, as there is much ignorance in our society and people need educating! The CWU will be exploring the possibility of building a LGBT History Exhibition that will help LGBT History become a focus for the whole year and not just for the month of February."
