Following a number of incidents where Vauxhall Combo and Corsa vehicles caught fire BT Group has decided to recall all of these vans. The fires started due to electrical faults on the vehicles.

The CWU has been involved in the investigation into the cause of the vehicle and we do support the precautionary measure of recalling the vehicles for modification. Around 1200 vehicles have been successfully recalled, parked and batteries disabled by BT Fleet. Clearly the recall of this number of operational vehicles causes a number of issues, some of which have been raised by the CWU.

Fuel for Openreach Vehicles

Two of the main fuel suppliers, Total and Chevron (Texaco) have agreed that BT drivers can use their current fuel cards to refuel their hire vehicles (negotiations are continuing with BP). Drivers must present a letter, containing their line manager's name and contact details, together with their current fuel card and BT identification. The line manager should ensure that each of their drivers is sent a copy of the authorisation letter, together with the latest briefing from Openreach.

Hire Vehicles

There are a number of points that need to be highlighted. The majority of people using a replacement hire vehicle will be using a van larger than they are used to. They must take extra time to become comfortable in driving these vehicles safely. Anyone now driving one of the larger Transit vans needs to be aware that the speed limit for these is 60mph compared to 70mph for the original vehicles.

Drivers of all affected vehicles are being contacted by BT Group. If you have any questions, please ask your manager.
