Health, Safety and EnvironmentHSE "Better Backs Campaign"
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in partnership with Local Authorities is running a national campaign to tackle back pain in the workplace. Back ache is a fairly common problem in the UK. In fact 80% of adults will suffer back pain at some point during their adult life. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are the most common occupational illness in Great Britain, affecting one million people a year. They include problems such as low back pain, joint injuries and repetitive strain injuries of various sorts. The HSE has a new MSD Web site with a "Better Backs" campaign section plus sections on back pain, risk assessment, return to work, Manual Handling assessment chart (MAC) tool, Guidance and Research Section, Musculoskeletal Disorders section, and Manual Handling Section and lots of information and guidance.
Focusing on the experiences of fictitious rock band Bäackpain, the web site explains how sensible workplace precautions can minimise the risks of back pain at work. It also gives positive tips and advice for managing back pain if it occurs, emphasising the positive benefits of staying active with back pain. At the same time, it shows employees and employers how they can work together to help people return to normal activities. |
