BT: Work Mode/Work Location Project

7 March 2008

BT has a responsibility to ensure data held on employees and their work locations is accurate and up-to-date. Therefore, BT is asking all the workforce to check, and update if necessary, their official workplace address, emergency contact details and information about volunteering activities they undertake (e.g. with the Police, as a Justice of the Peace, School Governor, etc).

This new initiative has been subject to discussion over the last six months between the CWU (and Connect) and the Company. The BT People system will hold individuals’ working styles based on their use of buildings and the estimated time spent at their normal place of work.

The union has sought and received, clear assurances that no contractual term and condition is affected by this initiative which is essentially data gathering. This means that anything impacting upon an individual’s contractual status – for example garaging at home, homeworker status, receipt of allowances – should be unaffected by the data capturing process.

Information you provide will be held confidentially. It is securely stored and access is strictly controlled in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
